CBD oil can be made into various skincare products ranging from lotion to balm that have different therapeutic purposes. However, the most and easiest skincare product you can make from CBD oi is lotion and salve.

For those who are not familiar with what CBD is, this is the cannabinoid, a substance found in cannabis regardless of the strain that contains a medicinal compound that can cure various ailments.

CBD oil is manufactured heavily in the United States, Canada, and other countries that legalize medical and recreational marijuana since this is also used for recreation as well.

Homemade CBD lotions and creams are very easy to make. All you need is just a few preparations, and you will have yourself a freshly made infused topicals in just a short time.

Not to take this long, here is how you can make CBD-infused lotion at home.

Just to let you know, if you notice that your CBD lotion has a thick and has a whipped consistency, this is because this recipe is designed to moisturize dry skin. Just like your favorite moisturizing lotion, this recipe also uses nutrient-rich shea butter that is proven to soften and soothe inflamed skin. This recipe also contains aloe vera extract or gel that is a traditional remedy for skin irritations such as burns and allergies. Another recipe is the vegetable glycerin, which helps hydrate your skin by drawing water to it if applied.

Most importantly, this recipe uses CBD oil that can be purchased at your preferred cannabis dispensary or specialty shop around the US and Canada. If you prefer to add THC oil to your recipe, just follow the same step-by-step guide. To help you out, here’s the complete list of ingredients you need for your CBD lotion.

  • Two teaspoons CBD oil or CBD tincture
  • Half a cup of unrefined shea butter (refined will do)
  • Half a cup of coconut oil
  • Half a cup of aloe vera extract or gel
  • Two tablespoons and 1/8 cup of vegetable glycerin
  • Scented essential oil

The materials that are needed to be used are double boiler, measuring cups and spoons, spatula, a spoon, mixer or blender, and a glass container.

Process of mixing the ingredients for the CBD lotion

For the fun part, let’s proceed to mix all the ingredients. First, you should measure all of the ingredients before you mix them so that it will not affect the overall quality of the product. Next, you should fill the bottom of your boiler of two-inch water. If you don’t have a boiler, a double boiler will do. Warm the water to medium to low heat. Melt the shea butter and add in the coconut oil as the warms heat up. You should be gentle in melting the shea butter and the coconut oil until it’s free from lumps. Stir it consistently to thoroughly mix the butter and the oil without burning it.

Once it’s melted completely, turn off the stove and separate the melted oils that are now settled at the top of the water. Transfer the oil to a bowl and allow it to cool off for at least an hour. When it’s cooled down, add the aloe vera gel, the glycerin, and your preferred amount of CBD oil and the essential oil to the mixer bowl or the blender.

Once all the ingredients have emulsified, you can start mixing them all until its consistency is likened to whipped cream or it’s already thick enough.

This CBD-infused lotion will last for two weeks if you don’t put it in the fridge. To extend its shelf life to a month or longer, put it in the fridge and add vitamin E, which will serve as its natural preservative and make sure to use an airtight container.

What if something goes wrong with my cannabis lotion recipe?

It may sound easy to make. It is indeed, easy to make. However, mistakes do happen. No worries though, there’s always a workaround for that. The most common problem of making your cannabis lotion is the failure to achieve your desired texture, to fix this, all you need to do is to put an extra effort when you whip the mixture, and you can add more vegetable glycerin one a tablespoon at a time to have a more consistent texture. If you’re not satisfied with its thickness, you can add more aloe vera gel one tablespoon at a time. If it is too thin, you can melt another mixture of shea butter and coconut oil and add one tablespoon at a time to your finished product. If it’s not potent enough, you can add more CBD oil and mix it thoroughly.

How to properly add more CBD to make your lotion more potent?

If your homemade cannabis lotion’s purpose is to alleviate pain and discomfort such as muscle aches, inflammations, and spasms, it is recommended to get an accurate estimate of the amount of CBD oil that you are infusing with the mixture you made.

The trick is, when you make a CBD-infused skincare product, it’s best to start with a CBD oil that has a high concentrate. This will infuse more CBD to your current mixture without affecting the consistency of the lotion’s texture and body. The dosage of your cannabis-infused lotion depends on the amount of concentration that you initially applied to the mixture or recipe. Usually, CBD oil is measured in milligrams per milliliter. However, your recipe measures the ingredients through cups and tablespoons.

To achieve a ballpark idea of the right amount of CBD infused to your lotion, you have to do simple math. There are various CBD concentrate calculators that you can try online, and it’s very easy to search on your preferred browser.

Conclusion

Making your cannabis lotion recipe is practical, fun, and cheaper than the ones you can buy at the shop. However, you should make sure that you have the right ingredients, the right utensils, and the motivated mindset to make it a worthwhile experience.
