Blueberry Strain Regular SeedsThe berry indica in its original regular form, males included
4.67 out of 5 · 6 reviewsThe Blueberry strain first spread as regular seeds, the way DJ Short bred it from Thai sativas and an Afghani indica around 1979, and this pack keeps that older format. Expect roughly half the seedlings to grow into male plants. Growers choose regular Blueberry to make their own berry crosses, keep a male for pollen, or grow out a full pack to find a short, colorful female worth cloning as a mother plant.

What is the Blueberry strain?
Blueberry is a mostly indica hybrid (around 80/20) that DJ Short bred from Thai and Afghani plants, and regular seed is the form he released it in. SeedFinder notes that his Blueberry was never offered as feminized seeds. A regular pack grows both sexes; the females flower in roughly 7 to 9 weeks on 12/12, with DJ Short giving 45 to 55 days for his own line, and they test at about 16–24% THC.
DJ Short's description on SeedFinder gives 80% indica, and AllBud agrees. Regular packs can still show a few sativa-leaning plants.
JD Short has called Blueberry a reliable true-breeder: a chosen female pollinated by a Blueberry male gives seedlings that stay close to type.
Blueberry strain specs
These Blueberry figures lean on DJ Short's own breeder description as published on SeedFinder, with Dutch Passion's listing and the Leafly, AllBud and Weedmaps databases for comparison. Regular seeds carry more genetic spread than feminized ones, so individual plants, male or female, can land outside these ranges.

Where does the Blueberry strain come from?
Blueberry goes back to DJ Short's breeding work in the United States in the late 1970s, when he used an Afghani indica male to pollinate Thai sativa females. In a 2017 Willamette Week interview, his son JD Short said the Blueberry type appeared around 1979 among crosses of Thai, Chocolate Thai, Afghan and Oaxacan plants, and that DJ kept detailed notes on every phenotype while he stabilized the purple color and fruity smell.
Published lineage charts vary in the details. SeedFinder lists Blueberry as an F2 from a line built on Temple Flo and a Thai × Afghani hybrid, with Purple Thai (Highland Oaxacan Gold × Chocolate Thai) further back, while Weedmaps gives Highland Thai × Flo. In every version the base is mainly Afghani with Thai and Mexican sativa, and DJ Short's own Blueberry has only appeared as regular seed.
Why grow Blueberry from regular seeds?
Regular Blueberry seeds give you real males, which you need if you want to breed with one of the most used berry parents in cannabis. Blue Dream (with Haze), Blue Cheese (with UK Cheese) and Blue Widow (with White Widow) all come from Blueberry. With a regular pack you can pick a vigorous, well-colored Blueberry male and use it on your own females, or let a few Blueberry plants pollinate each other to make more seed.
Hunt the females for a keeper. Grow out the whole Blueberry pack, root a cutting from every plant before flowering, and keep the female with the strongest berry smell and best color as your mother.
What are Blueberry's flavor and effects?

Blueberry has a sweet, jammy blueberry aroma with hints of vanilla and sugar and a soft, earthy spice underneath; DJ Short describes both the smell and the taste as very fruity.

How do you grow Blueberry seeds?
Regular Blueberry seeds are simple to grow but add one job, sexing: start a few extra seeds, grow them on until the first pre-flowers appear, take out or separate every male, and give the Blueberry females about 7 to 9 weeks of bloom.
- Germinate3–7 days
Plant about twice as many Blueberry seeds as the number of females you hope to harvest, since around half will be male.
- Vegetate4–6 weeks
Take a cutting from each Blueberry plant before flowering, label it, and keep the cuttings in veg so the best female can be saved later.
- Flower7–9 weeks
Within about two weeks of 12/12, Blueberry males show small, round pollen sacs at the nodes; pull them before the sacs open unless you are collecting pollen.
- HarvestDay 45–63 indoors
Compare the Blueberry females side by side at harvest and write down smell, color and bud density to pick a keeper.
Grow tips for Blueberry
- Isolate breeding males. If you keep a Blueberry male for pollen, flower it in a separate room or tent; pollen drifts on air currents and on clothing.
- Select for the berry nose. DJ Short stabilized Blueberry for its fruity aroma and purple color, so rub the stems in late veg and favor plants that already smell of berries.
- Use the short frame. DJ Short describes Blueberry as dense and stout, around 0.7–1 m indoors, so a selected clone suits a Sea of Green with many small plants.
- Feed with a light hand. Weedmaps notes that Blueberry dislikes heavy feeding, so raise nutrients gradually and watch for burnt leaf tips.
- Expect a quick finish on some females. DJ Short's line can be ready in 45 to 55 days, faster than most listings suggest, so start checking trichomes on each female from week 6.
Is Blueberry the right strain for you?
Great pick if you
- Want to breed your own blue or berry crosses
- Like hunting a seed pack for a keeper mother
- Prefer a short, stout indica for small spaces
- Enjoy a calm, sleepy evening strain with a sweet nose
Think twice if you
- Want every seed to grow a bud-producing plant
- Have no room to sex plants or keep males apart
- Prefer an energetic daytime sativa
- Care more about maximum yield than flavor
Blueberry strain FAQ
Are Blueberry regular seeds male or female?
A pack of regular Blueberry seeds grows both. Expect roughly half male and half female plants, though any single pack can vary. Males show small pollen sacs at the nodes early in flower, while females show pointed calyxes with white pistils.
Why buy regular Blueberry seeds instead of feminized?
Regular Blueberry seeds give you true males for breeding and a wider spread of phenotypes to choose from. DJ Short's original Blueberry was only ever released as regular seeds, so regulars are also the closest match to the way the strain first spread.
Is Blueberry an indica?
Blueberry is mostly indica, about 80% indica and 20% sativa according to DJ Short's description and AllBud. Its Afghani parent gives it a short, dense build, though a regular pack can still throw a few taller, sativa-leaning plants.
How long does Blueberry take to flower?
DJ Short gives 45 to 55 days of flowering for his Blueberry, while most other listings say 8 to 9 weeks. Females from a regular pack can finish anywhere in that range, so check the trichomes on each plant rather than going by the calendar.
Who bred Blueberry?
Blueberry was bred by DJ Short, an American breeder now behind Old World Genetics. According to his son JD Short, the Blueberry type first appeared around 1979 from crosses of Thai, Chocolate Thai, Afghan and Oaxacan plants.
Which strains come from Blueberry?
Blueberry sits behind a long list of famous crosses, including Blue Dream (Blueberry × Haze), Blue Cheese (Blueberry × UK Cheese) and Blue Widow (Blueberry × White Widow). Weedmaps describes it as a parent to a large share of today's blue-named strains.
Is Blueberry true-breeding?
Blueberry is considered a stable line. JD Short has described it as a reliable true-breeder, meaning a selected female pollinated by a Blueberry male gives offspring that resemble the parents. Regular seeds still vary somewhat in height, color and smell.
How strong is Blueberry?
Blueberry is reported at about 16–24% THC, and Leafly lists DJ Short Blueberry near 20%. Females in a regular pack vary, so the best plant may test above or below the average.
How tall does Blueberry grow?
Blueberry is a short, stout plant. DJ Short lists about 0.7–1 m (2.3–3.3 ft) indoors, although some plants in a regular pack stretch taller, especially after the lights change to 12/12.
